Biography: Jost Amman strayed from the career path of his professor father and became a printmaker. However, he always retained an interest in scholastics, interacting in humanist circles. Amman is thought to have apprenticed in Zurich or Basel and then studied in France. Later in 1561, he settled in Nuremberg to work alongside Virgil Solis. Not long after, Solis died and Amman established a partnership with the deceased’s publisher. During this period, he illustrated up to fifty books, including biblical and merchant scenes and an artists’ instructional guide. Amman also produced decorative etchings and designs mostly for an upper class Nuremberg family.
